about
When I started considering different topics for TEDxTransmedia 2011, I always ended up in the same direction: the power of extending transmedia properties to areas beyond simple entertainment, exploring the potentials of a transmedial approach to actively help shape a better future.
Transmedia has the power to create pro-active communities and to connect generations; and with three typical Italian trademarks PASSION, COURAGE and MAGIC, to make the world better. Rome, for its history, is the Italian town that best enfolds these characteristics therefore I considered to hold the event there.
PASSION – as depicted by Federico Fellini, whom I met when I was younger and have never forgot since. Although he’s from Rimini, the rich coast of northern Italy, Fellini depicts Rome, my native town, like nobody else does, satirizing and blending religion; politics, with la dolce vita; Roman postcards and architecture with surreal Cinecittà constructions; drama with carnivals and parades. Rome has the capacity of waking up creativity, constantly; and the power to flare up emotion and excitement.
COURAGE – as dignitas and virtues of Roman commanders, who showed great courage and skills in the most difficult campaigns. Scipio, Caesar, Pompey and many others, that, although some criticism, have commanded their men showing great fortitude: discipline that allowed the Roman legions to conquer the “known world” for over half a millennium.
MAGIC – Rome with its eternal magic, is a living time machine that allows to experience firsthand history. Walking along the Roman Forum, where more than 2000 years ago, citizens and politicians came together and decided the fate of their territories, is an unforgettable experience, not to be missed.
Therefore, the decision is made. TEDxTransmedia 2011 will happen in Rome, Italy on September 30th 2011.
Where in Rome? At the MAXXI, the national museum of contemporary art created by architect Zaha Hadid to promote the art and architecture of the 21st century, the museum more Transmediale that I have ever experienced. … And Rome in September is not to be missed!
ABOUT TED and TEDx
TEDx was created in 2009 in the spirit of TED‘s mission, “ideas worth spreading.”
The program is designed to give communities, organizations and individuals the opportunity to stimulate dialogue through TED-like experiences at the local level.
At TEDx events, a screening of TEDTalks videos — or a combination of live presenters and TEDTalks videos — spark deep conversation and connections. TEDx events are fully planned and coordinated independently, on a community-by-community basis.
TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a four-day conference in California 25 years ago, TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives. The annual TED Conference invites the world’s leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes. Their talks are then made available, free, at TED.com.
TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Al Gore, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Isabel Allende and UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown. The annual TED Conference takes place in Long Beach, California, with simulcast in Palm Springs; TEDGlobal is held each year in Oxford, UK. TED‘s media initiatives include TED.com, where new TEDTalks are posted daily, and the Open Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as the ability for any TEDTalk to be translated by volunteers worldwide.
TED has established the annual TEDPrize, where exceptional individuals with a wish to change the world are given the opportunity to put their wishes into action; TEDx which offers individuals or groups a way to host local, self-organized events around the world, and the TEDFellows program, helping world-changing innovators from around the globe to become part of the TED community and, with its help, amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities.
